Advertising Disclosure

What we will and will not sell, and why a reference site about regulation has to be strict about it.

Last updated:

This page explains how the site is funded and what advertisers do not get.

What we may carry

Display advertising in clearly delineated slots, visually distinct from the guides. Sponsored content, if we ever carried it, would be labelled as such at the top of the page in body-sized text, before the content begins.

What we will not sell

  • A mention, recommendation or link inside a guide.
  • Any change to how a requirement or a technical point is described.
  • Pre-publication review. No advertiser sees a guide before it is live.
  • Naming a facility, vendor or service company as recommended. We do not do this for anyone, paid or not.
  • Removal of an unwelcome statement about how something works.

Why we are strict about it

This site describes what a regulated industry is required to do. If a reader cannot tell whether a statement reflects the directive or reflects who paid, the site has no value at all. That is a stronger reason than ordinary editorial independence, and it is why the line here is drawn further back than it might be on a consumer site.

Separation

Authors are not told which advertisers are running. Advertising has no input into what is published. With two writers this is easy to maintain, and we would rather state it than imply it.

Third-party ad technology

Advertising served by third parties may set cookies and collect browsing data under their own policies, which we do not control. See our cookie policy and privacy policy.

Covered separately in our affiliate disclosure.
